Storytelling in Economics
Master in Applied Economics · Spring 2025
The course has two halves. One is the argument in Robert Shiller’s Narrative Economics: economic stories spread through a population the way a disease does, and act as shocks to real outcomes while they do. The other is the craft of explaining a piece of empirical research to someone else, worked through real examples: what to show, in what order, and in what words. Both halves answer to the same test. The same result has to reach a technical audience, someone making a decision, and a reader with no training in economics.
The explainer for my job market paper is the same craft applied to my own work. It walks a general reader through the question, the method, and what the estimates can and cannot say.
Labor Market MX is the same craft applied to public data: the ENOE series, one page per theme, with the charts carrying the point.
One assignment asked students for their favorite stories told in songs. This playlist is built from what they shared.
